David Wunschel

Expertise

Dr. Wunschel's research has focused on mass spectrometry-based analytical tools for analysis of microbial carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids. Recent research has focused on determining the variation of carbohydrate, protein and peptide signatures in microbial samples useful for identification and forensics. The method development has focused on applying analytical tools useful for studying a broad variety of organisms, independent of an available genomic sequence database. Research within the initiative extends this approach to examining protein markers of immune response to exposure and infection in various in vivo and in vitro host systems. The goal is to identify easily accessible markers of response useful in useful in diagnosis or evaluation of therapies. Recent work has focused on detecting differential markers of exposure to Francisella and Pseudomonas pathogens in the respiratory tract of a mouse model following aerosol exposure. This work is done in collaboration with Drs. Shawn Skerrett and Charles Frevert at the University of Washington.
