David Wunschel
Expertise
Dr. Wunschel's research has focused on using analytical tools such as liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry for analysis of microbial carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids. These tools have been specifically applied to studying Bacillus anthracis and related organisms to address questions about their taxonomy and physiology. More recent research has focused on determining the effects of culture variation on protein and peptide signatures useful in microbial identification and forensics. The method development has focused on applying analytical tools independent of available genomic sequence of the organism. Current research extends this work to examining protein markers of immune response to infection and vaccination in varied in vivo and in vitro host systems. The goal is to identify easily accessible markers of response useful in useful in diagnosis or vaccine evaluation.
