George Bonheyo
Expertise
Dr. George Bonheyo's research employs molecular tools for quantitative identification and characterization of individual microorganisms and microbial communities in a variety of environmental matrices. Research themes include differentiating anthropogenic sourcing or influence from natural states and the use of living systems as solutions for sensing and remediation. Prior to joining PNNL, Dr. Bonheyo was the co-founder and CEO of GeoBiologics, Inc and also served as a consultant on microbial detection and natural products discovery to food safety and biotechnology companies. As an NSF Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow and as a research faculty member at the University of Illinois, Dr. Bonheyo studied the geomicrobiology of carbonate systems. Major projects concerned travertine hot springs, microorganism transport and colonization, and polymicrobial diseases of corals.
