Multiple grants awarded to EBI
September, 2007
- The NIH's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) has awarded PNNL $5.9M to establish the Center for Novel Biomarkers of Response at PNNL. This Center is part of the NIH-wide Genes and Environment Initiative. The U54 Center grant application was led by Joel Pounds, who will also direct the Center.
- Galya Orr received $200K through an EPA Star grant to investigate the Internalization and Fate of Individual Manufactured Nanomaterial within Living Cells.
- Brian Thrall received $1.9M from the NIH for a R01 grant entitled, Systems Analysis of Nanoparticle Biocompatibility. Several PNNL investigators from the Systems Toxicology of Nanomaterials Focus Area are participating in this research, including Jon Jacobs, Barb Tarasevich, Justin Teeguarden, Katrina Waters, Bobbie-Jo Webb-Robertson, and Rick Zangar.

5th Annual American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Biodefense and Emerging Diseases Research Meeting

The 5th Annual ASM meeting featured a poster submitted by PNNL scientist Dave Wunschel. The work illustrates the integration of tools under development within the Rapid Response to Biological Agents Focus Area to create host response signatures. Evidence of biosignatures of infection from both volatile organics and peptides were observed from small intestine cells cultured and infected with the 3D cell culture. These results give us confidence that useful biomarkers of biothreat agents can be identified in non-invasive samples such as breath and saliva.
